Resilience & Relationship

Kassy and Brad with Jack in the NICU

At our 20-week ultrasound, we walked in expecting an ordinary appointment - one filled with excitement, growing anticipation, and the joy that comes with imagining the future with our baby boy. We were planning, dreaming, and counting down the days until we would finally meet Jack.

Instead, that appointment changed our lives forever.

During the ultrasound, we learned that Jack had a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), a rare condition that affects the development of the diaphragm and lungs. In a matter of moments, our story shifted from celebration to uncertainty. We were suddenly thrown into a world we never expected to enter. The months that followed were filled with appointments, fear, and countless unknowns. Every milestone carried both hope and worry. We held tightly to every piece of good news.

When Jack arrived, our family was complete and our NICU journey began; a journey marked by love, resilience, heartbreak, and moments we will carry with us forever. During that time, one small act of kindness became deeply meaningful to us: receiving matching blankets, one for Jack and one for us. By exchanging them, our scents allowed us to stay connected when we couldn't be by his bedside. Those blankets became more than fabric; they became comfort, connection, and a reminder that love remains present even through physical separation.

Through his 104 days, Jack overcame far more than anyone expected. He was resilient, and that resilience blessed us life changing relationships, lessons about life, and memories we'll cherish forever. The last week of his life, especially, was filled with special moments we only got to experience because Jack fought through numerous challenges that could have taken his life much earlier.

Jack loved people, and those who met Jack loved him and us well. Beyond his direct connection with those who cared for him, he created an environment for us to build meaningful relationships in the NICU. Because of Jack, we felt love deeper than anything we'd experienced before from family and friends, from other NICU families, and from the medical team. The people who were part of his journey, the relationships built during his journey, have forever changed our lives.

While our story includes profound grief, it is also a story of connection, compassion, and love that continues beyond loss. Through Jack's legacy, we hope families facing uncertainty will feel supported, seen, and reminded that they are never alone.
